Design

A building is only as good as its design. A sustainable building is a seamless integration of the climate it exists in, the balance of light and heat, user comfort, and ecological balance.

80% of all GHGs impact during the lifetime of a building can be mitigated completely and with hardly any additional cost, when designed right. The longevity of a building gives us an opportunity to have a net positive impact on the environment. This needs vision to design breathing and living buildings.

Design for climate

We work with design teams to match the building with the climate it exists in. Right from building orientation, usage of shading devices to the building envelope itself; every aspect is eco-engineered to respond seamlessly to its immediate environment.

Design for light and heat balance

We focus on all aspects of the building facade, right from daylight patterns and glare to the energy requirements of the building. Through our work in building energy modelling, we help architects design facades that optimise natural light, thereby reducing overall energy need.

Design for people

We spend most of our lives inside buildings which makes designing of ventilation, indoor air quality and indoor greenery very critical for our health, wellbeing and fair levels of comfort. We bring expertise required for understanding the connectedness of indoor and outdoor elements and their effect of people. We also design with the larger stakeholders in mind which is beyond the residents – the builder, community around as well as the workers involved in the project.

Design for ecological balance

A world with finite resources means construction as well as post occupancy lifetime of a building should be resource conscious – whether it’s energy, water or other material consumption. We employ a measured approach to maximise use of renewables and utilise resources locally to eliminate impact beyond the project site. This includes waste management and material usage through the lifetime of the building.

Design with ecology friendly material

50% of the waste generated by a building is during it’s construction and the take-make-break approach can’t last forever. Our partnership with C2C brings expertise to design buildings with material which enhance or, at the least, integrate into the environment at the end of their life. We would bring products and material which making living happier – whether it is the paints, the flooring or the wood utilised in the project.

Spread the word

All the stakeholders need to become brand ambassadors of the building and we will help this through outreach activity. Outreach starts right during construction phase, ranging from marketing activity to awareness sessions during and post sales and finally aiming for achieving the highest grade certification – LEED, IGBC and GRIHA. Our goal is to have every building championing the industry and becoming the new norm for the future.

Creating self sustaining living spaces

Mermit Auriga is a luxury residential complex in Bangalore, housing ten spacious flats with a total built-up area of 26300 square feet. Developed by Mittal Builders and eco-engineered by Smarter Dharma, this project aims to be a planet-friendly residence.

A multi-purpose urban building

Lighting accounts for 20% of the electric load in commercial buildings in India. Using blinds to shield from excess sunlight and continuous air conditioner use to cool the room are clear signs of ill thought-out glazing.

With a series of daylight simulations and glare analysis, we reduced the electricity requirement of a commercial building of 6.5 lakh square feet by 29%. Along with a slash in the capital cost of installation, this also reduced the energy required to cool the building.

Circular Economy in Granite industry

We worked with a very progressive and conscious granite manufacturer, TABIndia to help convert their waste into a reusable resource. TABIndia’s granite slurry has been converted into the greenest bricks in the country which led to us winning an innovation award for design in October 2015.
